14 December 2008 Cecil Hedley Hughes is (incredibly) 80

The evening before this auspicious event saw a gathering of friends and family in a nearly-secret location in Thorpe. Nearly-secret from the point of view that it was as difficult to find as a trained printer in a Government Department. Sorry, back off the hobby-horse: it was a splendid evening; a good old-fashioned Scottish ceilidh. This is evidenced by the photos, depicting CHH himself; Angela Brandish-Hughes (a fine Mistress of Ceremonies); tables heaving with old friends — Marchants; Gibbons; Walkers; Peter and Marguerite (who supplied the photos) all worked their way into camerashot, and many more missed out. Hard luck: we'll get you on your own 80th. An excellent Piper to herald the haggis; David Robertson to recite the right words; a gaggle of itinerant minstrels, in severe need of haircuts, to 'sing' a ditty especially composed by Smith, T and a nice picture of Jordan's presentation, with PJ Bradbury in reflective mood. Finally, a most appropriate birthday cake signifying Cecil's lifetime interest in Radio in all its aspects. A lovely evening.
