March 1976: Clerkenwell, just north of Atlantic House

Philip Marriage writes:  For the photographers in Atlantic House, the area north of Holborn Viaduct around Clerkenwell Green, offered many opportunities for interesting pictures. GD would occasionally hold lunchtime photo competitions and this selection (apart from the last) was produced on the theme of 'lettering' and date from March 1976. However the area, known for its little specialist workshops especially for the watch-making and jewellery trades was soon to experience development into al fresco  restaurants, coffee bars and smart offices. This change is already apparent in the last photo, from May 1976, showing the demolition of the buildings in Saffron Hill ready for a new office block — a fate that would befall Atlantic House in time.
